Should I Take My Medicine?

Someone once asked me the following question, “If I am believing God for healing, should I continue to take my medicine?”  I think this is a great question and I think many other people need to hear it answered.

On one hand, I understand that you were healed by the stripes of Jesus over 2,000 years ago (1 Peter 2:24) and that you are still healed today. You are not sick and trying to get healed. You are healthy and resisting sickness. However, on the other hand, I understand that the physicians are telling you that you are sick and that you need to continue taking your medicine. So how should Christians respond when we’re in this situation?

Before I answer that, I want you to know that God is not limited. He can use a physician, medicine, surgery, and natural remedies to heal you. He is also more than capable of bypassing all of these and healing you miraculously through His divine power. God has the supernatural power to heal you however He wants, whenever He wants, and wherever He wants. God’s ways to heal you are unlimited!

In light of God’s limitless options, what are we to do? What is the wisest decision we can make?

First, spend time with your heavenly Father seeking His direction in your situation. Pray, read your Bible, and take some time to listen and find out what God is saying to you specifically. Once you believe you have heard from God, confirm it with scripture. The spoken word of God is always supported by the written word of God.

Second, once you have received this word from God, you can begin to operate in faith. Faith is complete confidence and assurance. If you have faith, you will be fully persuaded in strong belief. Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing the word of God. Hearing the word of God is how you receive faith. True faith produces action. If you are completely confident, assured, and fully persuaded in strong belief, then you will do what God has told you to. Biblical faith means acting on what you have heard from God. Faith is the action that corresponds with the word you received from God.

It is so important that we understand the relationship between these two steps.

  • You do not want to only hear God’s word, but not put it into practice (James 1:22-25).

  • You also cannot operate in faith unless you have heard from God.

Let me give you an example of this. If my neighbor says, “I believe Pastor DaVon is coming over to my house to cut my grass,” and I never said that, then he is not operating in faith. He has to make himself believe something I never said (hence the phrase “make believe”). My neighbor can play make believe until his grass is ten feet tall, but I won’t be coming over to cut it because I never said I would.

We have to hear from God, confirm what we heard with scripture, and put it into action. It’s imperative that you find out what God is saying. Is God telling you to come off the medicine? Is He saying to continue taking it? Whatever God says determines your next move. Operate in faith by doing whatever God tells you to do. Being obedient to God is the key to experiencing creative miracles in your life. Choose to obey and let God heal you His way!
