Make Room For The New
2 Kings 4:8-13
8 Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. 9 And she said to her husband, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. 10 Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.”11 And it happened one day that he came there, and he turned in to the upper room and lay down there. 12 Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite woman.” When he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘Look, you have been concerned for us with all this care. What can I do for you? Do you want me to speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’”
I declare that you will go forward, accelerate, and make room for the new in 2022!
You are off, you are running, and you are not turning back!
This is your year to step out of fear and into something new. This new thing may be something that never existed or something better than what was before. It might be something uncommon, unheard of, or unprecedented. No matter what new thing God is doing in your life, you will have to make room for it.
In the above passage, we see someone making room for God to do something in her life. The prophet Elisha spent much of his ministry traveling throughout Judah. During the course of his travels, he would often pass through the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman in Shunem recognized that he was “a holy man of God,” so she opened up her home and provided him with food and a place to rest. She wanted to serve God by serving Elisha.
After Elisha visited her home several times, the woman mentioned to her husband that they should make a room for Elisha so he can stay with them whenever he is in town. She also wanted to furnish the room so that he could rest comfortably while he is in their home. She wanted to make room for the man of God.
Making room means you have to create space for a particular purpose, either by setting up something, reorganizing things, or removing something in the way.
For instance, suppose I am believing God for a new car, but my garage is filled with clutter and junk. I would need to make room for the new car God is giving me by reorganizing some of the clutter and removing some of the junk in my garage.
Just like we have to physically make room for new things, we also have to make room for what God is doing in other areas in our lives. You need to make room in your schedule, in your mind, and in your heart for God.
Are the cares and concerns of this world filling your life with junk and clutter?
Do you have room for God?
Do you have time to fellowship with Him?
Do you have space in your mind to meditate on His word?
Do you have space in your heart to worship Him?
How often does God and His Word get your attention?
You have to make room for God.
The Shunammite woman made room for God by making a room for the man of God. Her act of making room for God created the space for God to bless her with a new thing. When she made room for God, Elisha, speaking by the spirit of God, asked her, “What can I do for you?”
When she made room for God, it opened doors of opportunity for divine intervention in her life.
I want to encourage you to create space in your heart for God. Make spending time with God a priority.
Rearrange your schedule to make room for Him.
Making room for God in your heart increases your capacity to receive new things from Him.
How can you make room for God this year?
